Description

This article describes the best practices for MRP (Media Redundancy Protocol) configuration on FortiSwitches.

Refer to the document Fortiswitch/7.4.4/fortilink-guide for MRP configuration.

Refer to the document Auto-manager/config-switch for Auto-manager configuration.

Refer to the document FortiSwitch-7.4.0-Feature-Matrix.pdf for the MRP Feature matrix.

Scope FortiSwitch models FSR-112DPOE & FSR-124D for version 7.4.4 and above.
Solution
  1. Consider the below topology:

  1. Upgrade FortiSwitch to 7.4.4 and above.

  2. The Master switch and the Secondary Master FortiSwitch should be the ones that are directly connected to the FortiGate (as shown in the topology).

  3. Configure two auto managers, one of the switches as master, and the switch directly connected to FortiGate as standby

Example config on Master and Secondary master FortiSwitch:

On Master:

SR12DPTD2000xxx # diagnose switch mrp status
Status : enable
Domain-id : FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF
Domain-name : domain1
Config role : AutoManager
Oper role : Client
vlanid : 4094
ring-port1 : portx (Forwarding)
ring-port2 : portx (Forwarding)

Manager:

Ring state: CLOSE
Best Manager MAC Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
Priority : 40960
Topology Change Interval, ms : 20
Topology Change Repeat Count : 3
Short Test Interval, ms : 30
Default Test Interval, ms : 50
Test Monitoring Count : 5
Test Monitoring Extended Count: 15

On the Secondary Master:

SR12DPTD20000xxx # diagnose switch mrp status
Status : enable
Domain-id : FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF
Domain-name : domain1
Config role : AutoManager
Oper role : Manager
vlanid : 4094
ring-port1 : portx (Forwarding)
ring-port2 : portx (Blocking)
