FSR Email Templates vs Communication modules

There appears to be two ways to send notification emails to users.  Using the Communication module or using the email templates module.  While I can find examples of using the communication module such as "Investigate Suspicious Email" playbook in the Use-Cases collection, I can find no example of using the Email Templates module.  Is Email Templates a preferred or a deprecated method of sending emails to a user?

Email Templates are used with SMTP Connector. 

Here is an example of  an email template that you can use with attached playbook 

This Playbook triggers on Alert Severity update to send notification using email template.
In Email template you can define jinja variables whose values are updated during playbook execution. Currently ansible filters do not work with Email templates , hence use only jinja expressions
