Description

This article describes how Windows 10 MDNS Can Cause Performance Issues.

Scope

FortiNAC.

Solution

Windows 10 machines now natively support MDNS:

  • MDNS resolves host names to IP addresses within small networks that do not include a local name server.
  • MDNS uses multicast and the destination address is 224.0.0.251.

It is recommended to restrict this multicast traffic from Network Sentry with ACLs to reduce performance issues.
