Description

This article describes how to resolve the 'unknown file format' for the license status

Scope

FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer.

Solution

This issue usually happens when licensing just went under renewal. This will affect some of the features of the unit, including being unable to run certain commands, for example:

config fmupdate service
Critical error: command 'fmupdate.service' is not permitted if no valid license
No permission to 'config fmupdate.service'

Below is the sequence of steps that can be taken to troubleshoot the license:

  1. If the unit can reach the internet, ensure the connection to FortiGuard is available. Referring to the KB article: Technical Tip: License does not reflect at FortiAnalyzer/FortiManager

Note:

If the license is renewed and is reflected in the support portal, give some time for FortiGuard to update its database.

  1. -If the unit is unable to reach the internet, the license file can be manually uploaded in the GUI interface. Navigate to Dashboard > License Information Widget and select the 'Upload License' button.

  1. It is also possible that the error is due to a mismatch image and the platform type. To verify the platform that is currently being used, run the following command:

get system status

Based on the image, the current platform detected is VM64 while it is running on a KVM unit. This could happen when the unit does not migrate properly.

Refer to the following KB article for guidance on proper migration activity: Technical Tip: Migrating FortiManager/FortiAnalyzer to a different platform
