Description

This article describes the 'Invalid license Duplicated' error that occurs when a license (.lic) file that has been previously used is being re-used on a different VM instance and offers a solution.

Invalid-License-Duplicate.jpg

Scope FortiMail.
Solution

To resolve this condition, the VM instance where the license was previously used needs to be shut down completely for at least 90 minutes. Reinstall the license after that.

After 90 minutes, the VM license deregisters from FortiGuard servers, and it will be possible to use it again on a new VM.

Note 1:

This is an automatic process. It is not possible to speed it up.

Note 2:

If the problem persists, open a ticket with the TAC, providing the following information:

get sys status

diagnose autoupdate status

diagnose autoupdate versions

diagnose debug enable

diagnose debug application updated 7
execute update now

To disable debug mode, execute the following command:

diagnose debug disable

Output from CLI:

fmail # diagnose system vm
System Time: 2025-09-05 15:42:44 CEST (Uptime: 0d 0h 56m)
UUID: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
File: Subscription License
Resources: 2 CPU/1 allowed, 3.9 GB RAM/1024.0 GB allowed, 249 GB Disk/1024 GB allowed
Registered: 0 (False)
Status: 3 (Invalid: License has been detected as invalid, please upload a new license)

The VM license is connected to the VM UUID. The main reason for the license duplication can be that the UUID of the VM has changed.

Make sure that the VM with the old UUID is shut down and not connected to the internet.

Upgrade to one of those versions is recommended: v7.2.6, v7.4.3, v7.6.0.
