Description This article describes the possible causes for and prevention measures for FortiGate powering off unexpectedly.
Scope FortiGate.
Solution

Possible causes for an unexpected FortiGate power off:

  • Power Failures: It is important to make sure that a power outages did not happen in the infrastructure which could have lead to the FortiGate shutting down unexpectedly. Ensure nobody shut down (or unplugged) the FortiGate from the power source.
  • Hardware Failures: Inspect the FortiGate for any hardware failures such as faulty power supplies, overheating components, or defective components that may cause the device to power off.
  • Environmental Factors: Consider environmental factors like inadequate cooling, improper ventilation, or exposure to extreme temperatures that could trigger the FortiGate to shut down. Check the sensor information by adding the 'sensor information' widget on the FortiView, or by running 'execute sensor list' in the CLI.
  • Crashes in the system: Download debug logs of the FortiGate by going to System -> Settings -> Download debug log. After downloading, open the file and search for 'Crashlog read' (use Ctrl + F for a quick search), then search for the date and time when the FortiGate powered off and check if crash data appeared in the logs at the same time.
  • Firmware or Software Issues: If the FortiGate powering off may be due to the software or firmware version, perform an upgrade of the firmware and test if the same issue presents in the newer version. Alternatively, open a ticket with FortiGate support and provide a detailed description of the issue with relevant history, as well as the logs that show the message 'FortiGate had experienced an unexpected power off!'.

Solutions to prevent future power off Issues:

  • Ensure a Reliable Power Supply: Make sure the power adapter is not causing the issue and that FortiGate is connected to a surge protector or UPS to avoid power fluctuations.
  • Environmental Factors: Make sure the FortiGate is not heated and has sufficient airflow. Ensure that the environment where the FortiGate is installed is free from dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures.
  • Schedule regular update: Make sure to keep the firmware up to date (if the issue is presenting in one version, it is better to upgrade if possible).
  • Consider Professional Testing: After making sure the above criteria are fulfilled, if the issue is still present, contact the Fortinet support team and provide the following:
    • A description of the issue.
    • The logs that show 'FortiGate had experienced an unexpected power off!'
    • Debug log output.

If possible, run an HQIP test and share the test results with support as well.
