Description This article describes the issue of FortiAP U231F APs not connecting to the controller at a remote site, while working perfectly at other locations. The article provides a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Scope FortiAP (7.0.5), FortiGate (7.2.9).
Solution

To troubleshoot the issue of FortiAP U231F APs not connecting to the controller at a remote site, follow these steps:

  1. Check the power settings of the AP and ensure it is set to 802.3at. However, note that the U231F AP does not have an option to override power settings, unlike other AP models.
  2. Verify the configuration of the switch port where the AP is connected. Compare the configuration with a working switch port at another location.
  3. Check for any compatibility issues between the FortiAP U231F and the FortiGate firewall. Although there are no known compatibility issues, it is recommended to check the configuration and firmware version of the firewall.

Debugs to collect from AP:

fap-get-status
diagnose debug crashlog read
cat /cfg/dhcpc_data.br0

Temporary workaround:
Reduce the number of DNS server entries on the DHCP server to a maximum of 2.

Resolution:
Upgrade the firmware of the FortiAP U231F to the latest version, which is 7.0.6 Build 0159. This version has resolved the issue for some users.
