Description This article describes how to transfer a VM License from one VM instance to another VM with a different serial number.
Scope FortiGate.
Solution

It is possible to use multiple VM instances with different serial numbers or the same serial number but a different UUID.

To transfer a license from VM instance(s) to another VM with a different serial number, follow the procedure below:

  1. Download the license file of the old VM instances from the support.fortinet.com portal.
  2. Shut down the old VM instances and, after 90 minutes, check to ensure the instance has been removed from the support.fortinet.com portal. If so, add new VM instances in the portal.
  3. Upload the same license that was downloaded from the old VM instances to the new VM instances. Everything should work as expected afterward. To Upload the license: Go to Settings -> FortiGuard -> Select FortiGate-VM License -> Upload.

Note:

  1. The configuration remains the same even after the license transfer however, the FortiGate-VM will reboot after uploading the license.
  2. If the VM is in a High Availability (HA) configuration and the license is uploaded to the primary node, it will cause a mismatch between the primary and secondary nodes, resulting in the secondary node no longer being seen in the HA settings in the Primary.
