Description | This article describes the limitation of USB Passthrough on Proxmox (KVM). |
Scope | FortiGate virtual machines running on Proxmox or KVM solution. |
Solution |
Some of FortiGate's physical devices have a USB port that can be used to connect a USB stick for storage purposes. One of its applications is using the USB stick or flash drive to back up the FortiGate configuration like the image below.
Virtual machines can also have USB ports added to its hardware list, but the Hypervisor must allow the USB stick connected to the host hardware to be accessed by the virtual machine. This feature is known as USB passthrough.
Even the USB passthrough is allowed on the Proxmox solution a FortiGate VM cannot detect it. In the example below a USB stick of 2GBytes was connected to the Proxmox host and passthrough enable to VM100 (FortiGate), using the command 'get hardware status' the flash drive (USB stick) is not shown on the command output. FortiGate GUI does not show the USB disk as available either.
