Description This article answers commonly asked question on the number of L2 and L3 interfaces each FortiGate has.

Solution

Since FortiOS version 5.4, FortiGate has no limits to the number of L2/L3 interfaces each device can have. All physical interfaces (RJ45, SPF, SPF+, SPF28, QSPF28 etc.) can be either L2 or L3 interfaces depending of the Interface Role assigned (described in What's New in FortiOS 5.4). The number of interfaces is specified in the datasheet for every device (for example: Fortinet Product Matrix) and the role of the interface can be defined regardless of the interface label on the physical unit (LAN, WAN, DMZ, HA etc.).
