Description This article describes how to isolate the power supply or power adaptor issues before proceed to return merchandise authorization (RMA).
Scope FortiGate.
Solution

The following are commands to check the power supply status:

execute sensor detail

execute sensor list

  1. FortiGate's power supply 2 (PS2) failed to supply voltage result as below:

Power Supply 1:

43 PS1 VIN alarm=0 value=218 threshold_status=0
44 PS1 VOUT_12V alarm=0 value=11.969 threshold_status=0

Power Supply 2:

48 PS2 VIN alarm=0 value=218 threshold_status=0
49 PS2 VOUT_12V alarm=1 value=-0.064 threshold_status=0x7  <----- Output voltage value is negative.

Working power supply 1(PS1) and non working power supply 2(PS2) have the same input voltage(VIN) value, but the VOUT of PS2 has a negative value compared to the VOUT of PS1 which means FortiGate power supply failure.

  1. FortiGate's power source failed to supply power or power cable failure on power supply 2 (PS2) as shown below:

Power Supply 1:

43 PS1 VIN alarm=0 value=218 threshold_status=0
44 PS1 VOUT_12V alarm=0 value=11.969 threshold_status=0

Power Supply 2:

48 PS2 VIN alarm=1 value=0 threshold_status=0 <----- Input voltage value is zero.
49 PS2 VOUT_12V alarm=1 value=-0.064 threshold_status=0x7

Working power supply 1(PS1) has a value of 218 but non-working power supply 2(PS2) has zero value.

This result is mostly caused by external factors such as power source failure or power cable failure because power is not detected in FortiGate.

It is possible to change the power cable and power source to isolate the issue.
