Description This article explains how to interpret the SMART data to identify the power cycle count in a FortiGate Firewall.
Scope FortiGate.
Solution
  • When the command 'diagnose sys logdisk smart' is executed in the FortiGate Firewall, it displays the log disk status. This output also has information related to the power cycle count. The following example output shows the power cycle value of 92 in hexadecimal which is 146 in decimal.

diagnose sys logdisk smart
SMART status: ok
Auto offline data collection: disabled
Total time to complete offline data collection: 0 seconds
ID# NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
05 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0032 100 100 000 Old age Always Ok 0x00000000 00000000
09 Power_On_Hours/Min/Sec 0x0032 100 100 000 Old age Always Ok 0x00000000 000052D7
0C Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old age Always Ok 0x00000000 00000092 <- Power cycle value in Hexadecimal.

  • When the Firewall is rebooted by executing the command 'execute reboot', this specific value will not increase. As a result, the 'Last reboot reason' in 'get system status' will show as 'warm reboot'.

execute reboot
This operation will reboot the system !
Do you want to continue? (y/n)y

System is rebooting...

Last reboot reason: warm reboot

  • The value of 'Power_Cycle_Count' will increment during a firewall power cycle. The firewall will update the information of 'Last reboot reason' as 'power cycle' under 'get system status'. The following example output shows the Power cycle count incremented to a Hex value of 93.
