Technical Tip: How to use FortiConverter

Description	This article describes how to use the FortiConverter tool to expedite the migration of the configuration using a free license (only to convert from a FortiGate config file to another FortiGate).
Scope	FortiConverter Tool.
Solution	FortiGate to FortiGate Conversion: Log in to Support and go to Services -> FortiConverter or log in to FortiConverter Service directly. Select 'Get Free License'. Third-Party Vendor to FortiGate Conversion: Log in to Support and go to Services -> FortiConverter or log in to FortiConverter Service directly. Select 'Create New Ticket'.  Provide the required contact information and the Target FortiGate Serial Number: Select the brand and upload the config file from the previous device. Select the desired FortiOS version for the FortiGate: Proceed carefully with the interface mapping:  Same-type interface mapping does not meet the needs: It is possible to leave the customized requirements in the comment field in step 6. For any customized requirements, such as the need to map a physical interface to a VLAN interface, go on with other steps and leave the requirements in the comment field in step 6. When starting to process the ticket, the TAC team reviews the requirements. Select a dedicated management interface (optional): Add any additional comments that can help the conversion engineer (such as interface mappings). Review all the information added and select 'Create ticket'. Notes: The free license is only to convert from one FortiGate configuration file to another FortiGate. If the use of the tool is meant to convert from a third-party firewall to a FortiGate, a license is necessary to use it.  FortiTokens are not covered in config conversion, which means the token needs to be reassigned or reactivated to the new FortiGate. Starting from FortiOS v7.4.0, FortiGate configurations can be migrated from an older device to a new one directly through the FortiGate GUI, bypassing the FortiConverter portal: FortiConverter in the GUI. Successful migration requires the following: Account Alignment: Both the source and target devices must be registered under the same FortiCare account. Connectivity: Both units must have internet access to communicate with the FortiConverter server. Licensing: The target FortiGate must possess a valid FortiConverter Service license.
