Description

This article describes how to check the hardware revision on a FortiGate.

Scope

FortiGates with multiple hardware revisions.

Solution

The only time when it is necessary to verify the hardware revision is when forming an HA cluster, and one of the units shuts down.

Technical Tip: Error 'slave and master have different hdisk status. Cannot work with HA master. Shut...

Not many units come with multiple hardware revisions, but identifying the revision number is not a straightforward process.

There are only 2 indications that the hardware revision may be different:

  • The presence of a disk (older units only, newer units clearly specify the presence of the disk through the SN: 60E=no disk, 61E=has disk).
  • The part number as shown below:

The indicative '-01' may specify the revision number. Revisions can be either hardware or software.

However, having 2 units with different indicatives in the Part-Number field does not mean that the 2 units have a different hardware revision number, or that they will not form a HA cluster (only a different hardware revision will cause the cluster not to form).
