Description

This article describes a situation where administrators experience a blank/non-responsive screen after attempting to access a FortiGate using the Remote Access function in FortiGate Cloud.

Scope FortiGate, FortiGate Cloud.
Solution

As per the official documentation, FortiGates connected to FortiGate Cloud support cloud-based Remote Access, where administrators can access the FortiGate web GUI directly from FortiGate Cloud. FortiGates with active FortiGate Cloud subscriptions can be accessed with read/write permissions, whereas FortiGates with no subscription are only accessible in a read-only fashion. See also: Feature Comparison

Read-only Remote Access is only supported in FortiOS as of v7.0.14, v7.2.8, v7.4.2, v7.6.0, and all later revisions. Devices that are no-subscription and are running older firmware revisions (such as FortiOS v7.0.12 or v7.2.7) will not be accessible via FortiGate Cloud for remote management/access.

Issue:

If a blank white screen appears when attempting to use the Remote Access feature with a no-subscription FortiGate, then it is likely that the device is running an older firmware revision that predates the read-only access feature.

Solution: Upgrade to the following firmware versions or any later revisions:

  • v7.6.0 and later versions.
  • v7.4.2 and later versions.
  • v7.2.8 and later versions.
  • v7.0.14 and later versions.

Note 1:

The above limitation applies to no-subscription FortiGates that are limited to read-only Remote Access. Read/write access (available to devices with FortiGate Cloud Subscriptions) has already been supported by FortiOS as of v7.0.2 and later, as well as all revisions of v7.2/v7.4/v7.6 and beyond.

Note 2:

FortiGate Cloud now requires all no-subscription FortiGates to be updated to the latest revision for the currently-installed firmware branch within one week of release; otherwise, FortiGate Cloud functions are temporarily paused.

This means that it is generally not possible to trigger this issue now, since no-subscription FortiGates must be updated to a revision that will both support read-only access and also meet the security requirements of FortiGate Cloud (see also: Technical Tip: Security enforcement change for FortiGates provisioned to FortiGate Cloud without act...)
