Technical Tip: Configuring Internet Explorer for transparent NTLM authentication

Description

This article describes that the default behavior for Internet Explorer is to display an authentication window when it is prompted for an NTLM challenge.

Solution

However, it is possible to configure the browser (Internet Explorer) to automatically send credentials, transparently, with the following procedure.

1. In the Internet Explorer menu go to Tools -> Internet Options.
2. Go to the 'Security' Tab.
3. Select 'Custom level' for the zone to customize (Internet, Intranet, Trusted sites).
4. Scroll down to 'User Authentication' feature and select the NTLM authentication scheme:

• User Authentication.
• Logon.

(_) Anonymous logon.
(_) Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone.
(X) Automatic logon with current user name and password.
(_) Prompt for user name and password.
