Description This article describes the benefits of a FortiGate with local disk storage space.
Scope FortiGate v6.x, v7.x, and v7.2.x.
Solution

The following are features and benefits that are available only with FortiGate with local disk storage:

  1. To enable FortiView from Disk: Enable disk logging from the FortiGate GUI. To include sniffer traffic and local-deny traffic when FortiView from Disk: FortiView from disk FortiOS 6.2 FortiView from disk FortiOS 7.6

config report setting

    set report-source forward-traffic sniffer-traffic local-deny-traffic

  1. Using FortiView for historical information requires disk logging or remote logging: Historical FortiView Charts
  2. To use packet capture, the FortiGate must have a disk. It is possible to enable capture-packet in the firewall policy: Performing a sniffer trace or packet capture.
  3. WAN Optimization requires a local storage disk: Technical Tip: FortiOS WAN optimization.
  4. Certain features, such as explicit proxy, web caching, and WAN optimization, will only be available on models that have a hard disk. Technical Tip: Explicit Proxy, web caching and WAN optimization features not showing on supported Fo....
  5. Local logging and Reporting: Technical Tip: Local Reports.
  6. Store-and-upload feature for FortiAnalyzer: Device logs.
  7. FortiGate file quarantine and quarantine file download: Technical Tip: How to configure FortiGate file quarantine.
  8. DLP logging: DLP log support for CEF
  9. Using the root FortiGate with disk to store historic user and device information: FortiOS v6.4.0 new features guide (Page 50).
  10. The Audit Trail feature of Workflow Management in the FortiGate requires disk logging: Add Policy change summary and Policy expiration to Workflow Management.
  11. Tracking rolling historic records of LDAP user logins: Tracking LDAP user logins
  12. In FortiOS 7.4.5 and later, the graph under Assets and Identities will not display unless the FortiGate has internal storage

Note:

To verify whether a particular FortiGate model supports local storage, refer to the hardware model nomenclature. Models ending with the digit '1' are equipped with internal hard disks (Local storage).

Examples:

FortiGate-30G: Does not include local hard disk storage.
FortiGate-31G: Equipped with local hard disk storage.
FortiGate-400E: Does not include local hard disk storage.
FortiGate-401E: Equipped with local hard disk storage.

The user can use the CLI to verify:
