Description

This article describes how to add widgets to monitor statistics and traffic. In situations that require full network monitoring and traffic logging, Fortinet recommends an analysis tool, such as a FortiAnalyzer unit, to collect and analyze traffic data. When this is not possible and basic traffic information and statistics are needed, the FortiGate unit includes some extra tools through the System Status Dashboard.

Scope

FortiAnalyzer, FortiGate.

Solution

The FortiOS dashboard has features called widgets. Widgets that can be added as required to show different types of information and statistics.

To add widgets, select the Add Content button on the top left of the first screen after login. Available widgets include:
  • System Information.
  • License Information.
  • Unit Operation.
  • System Resources.
  • Alert Message Console.
  • CLI Console.
  • Top Sessions.
  • Top Viruses.
  • Top Attacks.
  • Traffic History.

When a widget has already been added, this cannot be selected and appears greyed out.

Once added, it is possible to move the Widgets around on the dashboard as required by dragging and dropping to the desired location.

For more information on the Dashboard and Widgets, see the FortiGate Administration Guide in the FortiGate documents.

Additional note:

On newer versions of the FortiOS, such as v7.2.11 and v7.4.8, the option for adding widgets is Add Widget:

The options available include FortiView, Security Fabric, Network, System, Resource Usage, Security, User & Authentication, and WiFi.

However, each of these categories has an extended selection of options to choose from, for example:

Depending on the requirements of each infrastructure, the desired widgets can be added to the dashboard.

Notes:

  • The use of widgets increases resource consumption on the FortiGate, especially in environments with high traffic or limited system resources.
  • Widgets cannot be disabled or modified from the admin account for the local users. They must be disabled individually by each local user.
