Description

This article describes an issue where Google Chrome triggers FortiClient WebFilter blocks on the search results page due to the browser's prefetching behavior.

Scope FortiClient WebFilter, Google Chrome.
Solution

In Google Chrome, the search results page may be automatically blocked by FortiClient WebFilter even if no interaction with the links occurs, when related to blocked categories or specific URLs. In some scenarios, simply hovering over a result triggers the Fortinet block page.

This behavior is specific to Google Chrome due to its use of the prefetching feature, which loads URLs in the background to improve performance. Other browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge, do not exhibit this behavior in the same way.

To mitigate the issue, the prefetching feature in Google Chrome can be disabled to prevent automatic background requests that may trigger WebFilter blocks:

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. In the address bar, enter: 'chrome://settings/?search=preload'.

  3. Locate the option for Preload pages and disable it (label may vary depending on the Chrome version).

  4. Disabling this feature stops Chrome from sending background requests before user interaction, avoiding premature WebFilter blocks.
