Scope

  • When end users are using the FortiClient VPN-only version, and planning to migrate to the FortiClient full version to utilize EMS.
  • This is how the FortiClient VPN-only version GUI looks like:

Solution
  1. Uninstall the existing FortiClient VPN-only version from Control Panel under Start -> Control Panel -> Program and Feature, 'right-click' on FortiClient and select 'Uninstall'.

  1. Reboot the machine.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Fortinet\ and ensure the FortiClient folder is no longer present. If not, manually delete the FortiClient folder.
  3. Install the FortiClient full version, either from generic installer from the Support Portal, or FortiClient installer packaged by EMS.

If there are too many endpoint machines, uninstall the FortiClient VPN-only version via Group Policy Object (GPO) if they are AD domain joined machines:

wmic product where "name like 'Forti%%'" call uninstall /nointeractive

Note:

Do not run FortiClient full version installer directly without uninstalling existing FortiClient VPN-only first. This process is not supported. The FortiClient will run into random issues if FortiClient is migrated to full version in this way.
