Scope FortiClient EMS 7.2+.
Solution

This error may occur due to:

  1. Lack of memory on the FortiClient EMS server.

In this case, check the minimum requirements for installing FortiClient EMS and, if possible, add some more memory to the server. The following is the system requirements for using FortiClient EMS:

System requirements - FortiClient 7.2.10 EMS administration guide.

  1. Services related to the AD sync with EMS are stopped on the FortiClient EMS server.

Check if the connection services between Active Directory and FortiClient EMS are running. If not, start the services or, if possible, restart the FortiClient EMS server.

  1. Select only one OU during Domain Import.

If the Active Directory has many users and/or computers, select the entire AD tree instead of just one OU, as the following image demonstrates:

Selecting only one OU will require the connector to scan the entire domain to identify the selected OU, slowing down the object scan to the point where the connector fails.
