Why can I not get "auto connect" to work?

I have the current version of Forticlient (5.4.1). I installed this from the downloaded .EXE on two different models of tablets (Fujistu Stylistics Q704 with Win7, and Off-brand tablets with Bay Trail chipset with Win10).

 

I am successfully able to manualy configure IPSec VPN and register these clients with my Fortigate 80c. It works fine when forticlient is run manually, but unfortunately no matter what I do, I cannot get the "auto connect" option to remain on in Forticlient. The other options remain, but "auto connect" will not if I manually disconnect and reconnect. It will not persist after rebooting. Running Forticlient as administrator and checking it then does not help.

 

Any suggestions?
