What type of console cable

I have been contacted by a client that has a Fortinet 50A Firewall, they need some config changes done but do not have the password. I understand there is a password recovery procedure using the console port. Question is will my blue Cisco flat serial cable work?

No. But the Fortigate box should come with a dedicated console cable.

Thanks for your prompt response. Problem is that the company that installed it didn' t leave a cable onsite and have now gone into liquidation. I have looked around some of the obvious places but I can' t buy just the cable. Does anyone have a part number? Is it easy to make one using cat5 cable and RJ45 conectors?

Hello anjam, if you have cisco products at your site, you can use their serial cable , works great. good luck.

I have loads of Cisco console cables but the poster above says they don' t work. Problem is the client is about 2 hours away so I want to be sure I will be able to solve the problem while I am there. Has anyone actually used a Cisco console cable with the Fortinet device? Thanks for your help.

yes, i have used it, the cable is RS232 one side and other is RJ45

I just took both cables to a breakout box. Below are the pinouts. Fortinet' s black serial cable: DB9 RJ-45 1 => - 2 => 3 3 => 6 4 => - 5 => 5 6 => - 7 => - 8 => - 9 => - Cisco' s blue serial cable: DB9 RJ-45 1 => - 2 => 3 3 => 6 4 => 7 5 => 4 & 5 6 => 2 7 => 8 8 => 1 9 => - So basically the Cisco cable is a high powered version of Fortinet' s. You probably won' t be able to use the Fortinet cable in a Cisco though. . . -Bob

cisco is using the console as a " rolled up" meaning : 1 to 8 2 to 7 etc.. so cisco will work on fortigate 50 but ,fortinet console will not work on cisco products.
