What issues occur when upgrading from FortiOS v7.4.12 to v8.0.0?

Hello, I’m a student studying FortiGate. I have an FG-80F, and I’m planning to upgrade from version 7.4.12 to 8.0.0. Are there any specific issues I should be aware of? Apart from SSL VPN, are there any other potential problems?

    Hi @maithkano ,

I recommend performing the firmware upgrade by following the designated upgrade path. Additionally, please review the release notes, particularly the sections related to known issues, for a clearer understanding of the OS features and any potential limitations.

    Hello @maithkano

Besides SSL VPN removal, there are a few important things to check before moving your FortiGate 80F from FortiOS 7.4.12 to 8.0.0:

    • SSL VPN tunnel mode is removed in newer releases. It is recommended to migrate to an IPsec VPN first. Existing SSL VPN tunnel configs are not migrated automatically.
    • Some proxy-based features may be deprecated/limited on smaller models in newer code trains.
    • IPsec tunnels may restart if QoS profiles are configured (known 8.0.0 issue).

My recommendation for a lab/student setup:

    • Backup config first
    • Follow the official upgrade path exactly
    • Test VPN and policies after upgrade
    • One thing that engineers occasionally forget to do is to ignore or do not pay attention to the "Known Issues" section in the release notes before performing an upgrade.

    regards,

    Sheikh

    Hello Maithkano

    Check the known issues here:

    https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortigate/8.0.0/fortios-release-notes/236526/known-issues

On the other hand I’d not recommend to upgrade to 8.0.0 if it is for production until a mature release (usually starting from patch 6 or 7).
