upgrading thru layers to newer or the latest code/firmware

I think I have the answer, and it's yes - but wanted to confirm with everyone.

new system running 7.4.8M 6484

logged in and got a msg about upgrading to 7.4.9. since auto upgrade was turned off i have the option to upgrade.  7.4.9msg.JPGtrying thru clicking to upgrade doesn't work so the process should be manual, i presume.

banner message says there's a (nother) issue with this firmware and i need to upgrade to 7.9M.

reviewing the document - Fortinet Document Library | Upgrade Path Tool

it seems like there are 2 upgrades to get to this firmware, 7.4.8M2795 then 7.4.9M2829.

Does this mean that i have to do 2 download/upload/reboots to 'jump' to the recommended level.  Again, i think the answer is yes - but wanted to confirm.

2 questions:

1 - If this is the path and procedure for upgrades from 1 version to another, higher version? ie no 'jumping' to the latest version? trying to click on upgrade from my console didn't work as the gui seemed to indicate.

2. since 7.6M is out and it would probably take quite a bit of upgrades thru this process - should i just spend the time and make that jump completely? How many people are running the latest 7.6M code and are there any special/strange issues there?

thanks in advance

Upgrade went w/o issues over the weekend.

thanks to all for confirmation and links to validate the upgrade.

apparantly in the previous version i had installed, the upgrade wasn't showing as 'valid' - but a download/upload resolved the issue and all is stable now.

  • Hi
    1) the advisable upgrade should be:
    - check upgrade path tool as you did
    - check release notes included with each destination firmware version; is very important to know how could affect your operation before. (see 2) for an example)
    - define a maintenance window with enough time to do a checking list after upgrade
    - check your conf in system > firmware & registration whether  you've automatic patching or not; you can decide upgrade manually too.

    2) we don´t know if you're using ssl vpn in your environment and / or your fortigate model, but if you're considering go to 7.6.x, remember that VPN SSL is not available anymore after 7.6.3+ firmware for all models.
Please take some time to read carefully this official doc:

    https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortigate/7.6.3/administration-guide/155142/ssl-vpn-tunnel-mode-to-ipsec-vpn-migration-new

7.4.10 was released recently with a lot of bugfixes.

Clicking upgrade will take you to the Fimrware upgrade page and you have perform upgrade procedure. Just clicking upgrade it doesnt starts upgrade.
