Stuck on Upgrade

I started the upgrade from EMS 7.4.5 to EMS 7.4.6 and am now stuck for more than 24 hours in 50% loop.

Ekrano kopija 2026-03-24 162224.png

And I am getting emails almost every 20 minutes, that the upgrade is scheduled.

EMS is scheduled to be upgrade on 2026-March-23 06:01 (EMS server time). The current version 7.4.5.2111 will be upgrade to version 7.4.6.2170 (M).

Any ideas how to exit the loop?

Hi,

Maybe this article could help:

https://community.fortinet.com/t5/FortiClient/Technical-Tip-EMS-stuck-on-auto-upgrade-from-v7-2-5/ta-p/362564

Should work even for your versions.

Thanks for the idea, Anthony. The documentation (if you switch to 7.4.6) does not say a lot about manual update.

What have I tried:

  • connected to my virtual EMS via CLI, restarted all the services (service restart --all)
  • then the upgrade came to phase of "FAILED" and automatically new upgrade date has been scheduled
  • I waited for the new date to come, the upgrade started, but stuck again at 50% (same window)

Can someone guide me how to manually upgrade to 7.4.6?

download and copy the 7.4.6 file on EMS and do emscli execute upgrade ems --local.file <>

No, I did not succeed.

I postponed automatic update for the max date available.

And am seeking an option to do the manual upgrade (download BIN file from FortiCloud and apply via CLI, did not do it at the moment).

ok thank you for your answer. on my side I opened a ticket at Forti but they tell me to use EMSDiagnosticTool output via EMS, EMS - Administrator - Generate Diagnostic Logs. Which is silly since you no longer have access to the EMS interface during the update. As always they are dumped...

While waiting for a solution i disabled the scheduled update

I've checked via CLI, it shows that from 77G disk space it has 50% used, so I presume that more than 30G is more than enough for the upgade. :)

Thanks for the idea! I'll go for CLI update and see my error. :)

Yes should be enough, in the error was written that min. 16.2 GB are needed.... in my case after the error on the CLI the installation was broken, i went back to the snapshot i did before, cleaned up and installed via the update function of the gui... so dont forget a snapshot, saved a lot of time

Sticking on an upgrade is usually down to the upgrade path. Have you double-checked the Fortinet Upgrade Tool for your specific hardware? Sometimes jumping too many versions at once causes it to hang or fail validation. It might be worth trying to go to an intermediate build first rather than jumping straight to the latest.

I would not consider upgrading EMS 7.4.5 to EMS 7.4.6 as a "jumping too many versions" :)

Same problem here, restart the services with "service restart --all" does not work.

I have the same error during the update. The manual update using SCP ends with the same error...

Same problem here, stuck at 50% with the auto upgrade scheduled.

Restarted services, but no change. Also checked the HDD free space and is not the problem.

Time to time it pop that "Something went wrong":

But suddendly it starts again with the 50% stuck window.

I am dealing with the same issue. I have a ticket open with TAC awaiting a reply.

Hello,

I recently performed a FortiEMS upgrade as well. Previously, I encountered issues when using the auto-update feature through the application. However, I did not experience any problems when upgrading using the following method:

  1. Took a database backup
  2. Took a backup via FortiEMS
  3. Took a snapshot of the FortiEMS server

After that, I downloaded the target version from the Fortinet support portal and ran the relevant exe file. The upgrade completed successfully without any issues.

Is your issue still ongoing?

With the release of 7.4.7 the upgrade from 7.4.5 went like a charm.Â
