SSL VPN can I use fortigate cert

Is it secure to use the fortigate ssl certificate or is it recommended to use your own as in the cookbook doesn't state. Also once the ssl vpn is setup and a user logged in how can you tell the ssl is working and encrypted is there an easy test. Thanks
