Question

Is FortiClient and Windows Server 2016 std 64-bit compatible?

Hi,

I'm just a client and I do not have access to the Forti Server.

If I run the FortiClient from Windows 7 PRO (x32) or Windows 10 PRO (x64), I can connect to the external server like a charm.

But I have tried to connect from a Windows Server 2016 std 64bit on the same LAN, addressing, firewall rules like the other desktops that alreay connected before, but I received the message at 80%:

“Unable to logon to the server. Your username or password may not be configured properly for this connection. (-12)"

I've been reading about and the advices was to type right username and password. I'm sure that I'm typing it right.

Are FortinetClient and Windows Server 2016 compatible?

Thanks a lot!

We had this same issue with a fresh & updated install of Windows Server 2016 with the (-12) error using FortiClient v5.6.6.1167. We tested the login on a MacBook (High Sierra) and Win10 (latest updates) and was able to use the same username/password/VPN setup without problems.

After some searching, I found that if you turn off 'IE Enhanced Security' (open Server Manager, click 'Local Server' on left, and look for it on the right) it will work after you fully close and restart FortiClient (server reboot wasn't needed).

Big thanks to this post for the solution:

According to the documentation, Forticlient 5.6 and Windows Server 2016 are compatible: https://www.fortinet.com/content/dam/fortinet/assets/data-sheets/FortiClient.pdf

I was strongly encouraged not to install FortiClient on a server, but that might be because I have 2012 R2 and there used to be problems.

    Anyway, I found this: https://serverfault.com/questions/522352/fortigate-vpn-client-unable-to-logon-to-the-server-your-username-or-password-m

It seems you can't have special characters in your password. Any chance that applies?

We had a $ in ours and it worked. I saw post about the special characters also when I was doing my troubleshooting, but the PW was assigned by the VPN server admin and we couldn't change it easily.
