internet connectivity issue after VPN connection.

Hi Team,

I need to access my client’s RDP system through a VPN connection. The client has provided VPN access, and I can successfully connect. However, when I connect to the VPN and attempt to access the remote desktop, the RDP session disconnects after a few minutes.

Interestingly, when I use my home internet, the VPN connection remains stable, and I can access the remote desktop without any issues. This problem occurs only when I connect from my office network, which is behind a FortiGate firewall.

My office LAN IP address is 192.168.1.100. After connecting to the client’s VPN, my assigned VPN local IP address is 10.1.0.15, and the remote desktop IP is 10.1.0.20.

Could someone help me troubleshoot and resolve this issue?

Hello,

 

Please check by running continuous pings, as there might be packet loss from your office to the destination IP address (10.1.0.20).

First, verify the actual underlay connection from 192.168.1.100 to 10.1.0.20 using a continuous ping test or a speed test.

The summary indicates that the issue could be with the office network, as you are able to perform RDP from home without any interruptions.

Hi ,My client has provided an L2TP/IPsec VPN with a pre-shared key. I have configured this VPN on my laptop and can successfully access Remote Desktop using the VPN connection. The Remote Desktop PC's IP address is 10.1.0.20.

Without the VPN connection, I can successfully ping the VPN gateway's WAN IP (216.51..). However, after establishing the VPN connection, my Remote Desktop session disconnects after a few minutes. At the same time, I frequently receive "Request Timed Out" errors when pinging Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8).

Notably, I can still ping the VPN gateway's WAN IP, and this issue occurs exclusively when using the office internet. When I attempted to capture packets from my LAN using FortiGate, I observed that packet capture works until the VPN connection is established. After connecting to the VPN, the capture only shows traffic reaching the VPN gateway, but the firewall does not capture any RDP traffic beyond that point.
