[GUI Bug] Loss of "dedicated to connect to peer FortiSwitch" status on ISL links after adding a swit

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a very strange display behavior on my FortiLink topology after adding a new device.

Context and Versions:

  • FortiGate: FGT-200F running v7.2.13 build 1762 (Mature)

  • FortiSwitches: 8x FSW-148F running v7.6.6 build 1137

  • Topology managed via FortiLink.

Issue Description: Up until yesterday, I had 7 switches deployed and everything was working perfectly. The physical inter-switch links (ISL) appeared correctly in the "FortiSwitch Ports" section as "dedicated to connect to peer FortiSwitch".

Then, I added an 8th switch ("03" on image 1) using our standard procedure, daisy-chaining it behind another FortiLink-managed switch ("02"). Right after connecting it, ALL our switches lost the "dedicated to connect to peer FortiSwitch" status on their uplinks/downlinks.

Now, the physical ports connecting the switches together appear as shown in screenshot #2:

  • They are tagged as simple "Edge Ports".

  • Their Native VLAN is _default.Forti_Link (_default) and Allowed VLAN is quarantine.Forti_Link (quarantine).

The strangest part: In reality, production is not impacted at all. The network continues to function perfectly and the trunks are fully operational in the background, despite this completely incorrect display in the GUI.

Troubleshooting already performed (without success):

  • Rebooted the firewalls.

  • Factory reset of the switches + full reconfiguration from scratch.

  • Removed and re-integrated switch 03 (the one that triggered the issue).

Is this a known GUI display bug with this specific firmware combination (FGT 7.2.x managing FSW 7.6.x)? Does anyone have a solution or a CLI command to force the FortiGate to properly re-evaluate the ISL links and fix the topology display?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello again Dreamwall52.

I found this solution, can you tell us if it helps, please?

Issue Overview

You are experiencing a GUI display issue where the inter-switch links (ISL) on your FortiLink topology are incorrectly shown as "edge ports" instead of "dedicated to connect to peer FortiSwitch." This occurred after adding an 8th switch to your network. Despite the incorrect display, the network functionality remains unaffected.

Context and Versions

  • FortiGate: FGT-200F running FortiOS v7.2.13 build 1762 (Mature)
  • FortiSwitches: 8x FSW-148F running FortiSwitchOS v7.6.6 build 1137
  • Topology: Managed via FortiLink

Troubleshooting Steps Already Taken

  1. Rebooted the firewalls.
  2. Factory reset of the switches and full reconfiguration.
  3. Removed and re-integrated the newly added switch.

Known Issues and Solutions

Based on the context provided, there are known GUI issues related to FortiSwitch topology display in certain FortiOS and FortiSwitchOS versions. However, your specific combination of FortiOS v7.2.x managing FortiSwitchOS v7.6.x is not explicitly mentioned in the known issues.

Recommendations

  1. Check for Known Bugs: Verify if there are any known bugs related to your specific firmware versions. The context provided does not list any known issues for FortiOS v7.2.x with FortiSwitchOS v7.6.x, but it is worth checking Fortinet's support site or contacting support for any updates.

  2. CLI Commands: Use the following CLI commands to gather more information and potentially resolve the display issue:

    • execute switch-controller get-connection-status
    • execute switch-controller get-physical-conn standard
    • diagnose switch-controller telemetry show switch-port <affected FSW SN>
  3. Contact Support: If the issue persists, consider raising a TAC ticket with Fortinet support. Provide them with the logs and outputs from the CLI commands mentioned above.

Follow-ups and Clarification Questions

  • Have you checked for any recent updates or patches for your FortiOS and FortiSwitchOS versions that might address this issue?
  • Are there any specific error messages or logs that appear when the issue occurs?
  • Have you tried downgrading or upgrading the firmware to see if the issue persists across different versions?

If you need further assistance, please provide additional details or contact Fortinet support for more in-depth troubleshooting.
