Question

FortiSwitch SFP+ to 1G SFP interoperability with forced 1G speed

Hello,

Is it possible to establish a fiber link between:

  • a FortiSwitch SFP+ port using a 10G SFP+ transceiver
  • and a third-party switch using a 1G SFP transceiver

by forcing the FortiSwitch interface speed to 1G?

I would like to know if:

  • SFP+ transceivers on FortiSwitch support 1G operation
  • or if both sides must use the same transceiver type/speed (SFP↔SFP or SFP+↔SFP+)

Has anyone tested this successfully with FortiSwitch and third-party switches?

Thank you.

Yes it could be possible if the port is supporting multi speed.

Could you please tell me which model of FortiSwitch you use?

Anthony

Usually no, a 10G SFP+ transceiver will not reliably link with a 1G SFP transceiver just by forcing the FortiSwitch port to 1G. Both sides should normally use compatible optics and speed, so use 1G SFP on both sides for a 1G fiber link, or 10G SFP+ on both sides for a 10G link. Some SFP+ ports support 1G, but the optic must also support 1G.
