Question

FortiSandbox VM-to-Hardware standalone migration.

Hello everyone,

I need to perform a migration from a FortiSandbox VM (version 5.0.5) to a FortiSandbox 1500G hardware appliance (version 5.0.5).

Does anyone have an official guide or documentation that explains the migration process from VM to hardware?
I would also appreciate any technical tips or best practices for this type of migration.

Additionally, are there any specific considerations or limitations that should be taken into account during this migration?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I found this solution, can you tell us if it helps, please?

Migration from FortiSandbox VM to Hardware

Currently, there is no specific official guide or documentation provided in the context for migrating from a FortiSandbox VM to a hardware appliance like the FortiSandbox 1500G. However, I can provide some general steps and considerations based on typical migration processes:

General Migration Steps

  1. Backup Configuration: Before starting the migration, ensure you have a complete backup of the configuration from the FortiSandbox VM. This can be done by navigating to System > System Recovery and saving the configuration file.

  2. Prepare the Hardware Appliance: Ensure that the FortiSandbox 1500G hardware appliance is running the same firmware version (5.0.5) as the VM to avoid compatibility issues.

  3. Transfer Configuration: Upload the configuration backup from the VM to the hardware appliance. This can typically be done through the web interface of the FortiSandbox.

  4. License Activation: Ensure that the hardware appliance has the appropriate licenses activated. You may need to contact Fortinet support to transfer licenses from the VM to the hardware appliance.

  5. Testing: After the migration, thoroughly test the hardware appliance to ensure that all configurations have been applied correctly and that the system is functioning as expected.

Considerations and Limitations

  • Licensing: Ensure that all necessary licenses are transferred and activated on the hardware appliance. Licensing issues can cause functionality problems.

  • Compatibility: Verify that all features and configurations are supported on the hardware appliance. Some features available on the VM may not be available on the hardware model.

  • Downtime: Plan for potential downtime during the migration process. Ensure that you have a rollback plan in case the migration does not proceed as expected.

  • Testing: Conduct thorough testing post-migration to ensure that the system is operating correctly and that all configurations have been successfully applied.

Follow-ups and Clarification Questions

  • Official Documentation: If you require official documentation, it would be best to contact Fortinet support directly for guidance specific to your migration scenario.
  • Licensing Transfer: Confirm with Fortinet support regarding the process for transferring licenses from a VM to a hardware appliance.
  • Feature Compatibility: Verify if there are any specific features on the VM that may not be supported on the hardware appliance.
