Is there a simulator for the fortiOS that I can load on a laptop to learn with, or do I have to buy a piece of gear?

    Welcome to the forums. There is a demo site for the major Fortinet appliances that you could access online for free. You cannot make changes (as far as I know), but you are able to look through the appliances' configurations.
