FortiNAC Compatibility with Legacy Device Firmware (FortiGate, Cisco, Extreme)

We are currently evaluating the integration capability of FortiNAC with the existing network devices in our environment, including FortiGate, devices from Cisco, and Extreme Networks.

According to the reference documentation, we understand that FortiNAC supports FortiGate starting from FortiOS version 6.0+ and later. Therefore, we would like to clarify whether FortiNAC can still integrate with or manage FortiGate devices running older FortiOS versions (for example 5.x) in case the firmware cannot be upgraded. If supported, what level of integration or functionality would be available?

Additionally, for network devices from Cisco and Extreme Networks, we would like to clarify whether there are any minimum firmware version requirements for integration with FortiNAC. Specifically, do these devices require a firmware upgrade to be supported, or can the integration be achieved using standard protocols such as SNMP, SSH, or RADIUS without upgrading the existing firmware?

FortiGate
  - Support Firmware Version: 6.0.5 or greater.
  - Recommended Firmware Version:
      - 6.2: 6.2.8 or greater
      - 7.0: (if using post-login banner)

Ref: https://docs.fortinet.com/document/fortinac-f/7.6.0/fortigate-endpoint-management-integration/387448/requirements

Regarding Cisco, I remember in the past we could integrate very old switches with FNAC that even Cisco NAC couldn't integrate (because very old). We just used ssh & snmp.

Thank you for the information.

I have also reviewed the documentation and understand that FortiNAC integration with FortiGate is supported starting from FortiOS 6.0.5 and later. However, I would like to confirm whether it is still possible to integrate FortiNAC with FortiGate devices running FortiOS 5.x without upgrading the firmware.

If it is not supported, what limitations or functional issues might occur when attempting the integration?

I don't think it will work since it is explicitly mentioned that the minimum is 6.0.5.

On the other hand it is not only a matter of work or not, since it is not supported then even if it seems to work there can be some unexpected behavior, and also in case of issue you will simply not be supported by Fortinet.
