Question

FortiGate REST API very slow since 7.6.3

Our application regularly does GETs but the problem happens for PUT/POST also. 7.4.x and 7.6.1 respond with little delay (HTTPS or HTTP). In 7.6.3 and 7.6.5, each and every REST call responds exactly 200 ms later. I can see this capturing the traffic and loading into Wireshark, and it is also observed in the system log (REST API calls) where it is generally at the process rate of 5 per second.

After downgrading back to 7.6.1 and no other changes, everything speeds up again.

Anyone else notice this? This is not good.

(I did not try 7.6.2 or 7.6.4, and this is KVM VM version.)

Hello again themanyandonlyglenn,

I found this solution. Can you tell us if it helps, please?

It seems like you are experiencing performance issues with the FortiGate REST API in versions 7.6.3 and 7.6.5, where each REST call is delayed by approximately 200 ms. This issue does not occur in version 7.6.1, indicating a potential regression or change in the newer versions that affects API performance.

Possible Causes and Solutions

  1. Version-Specific Issues: Since the issue is not present in version 7.6.1, it might be related to changes introduced in versions 7.6.3 and 7.6.5. It is advisable to check the release notes for these versions to identify any changes related to the REST API or performance optimizations.

  2. Known Issues and Fixes: The context provided does not mention any specific known issues related to REST API performance in versions 7.6.3 or 7.6.5. However, it does mention a GUI login timeout issue that was resolved in version 7.6.4. It might be worth testing version 7.6.4 to see if the issue persists.

  3. Debugging and Reporting: Collecting detailed debug information can help in diagnosing the issue. You can use the FortiGate Support Tool to collect debugs related to GUI slowness and errors, which might also be applicable to REST API performance issues. Troubleshooting Tip: Collect GUI slowness and errors debugs via Fortinet Support Tool.

  4. Contacting Support: If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Fortinet Technical Assistance Center (TAC) with the debug information for further investigation.

Follow-Up Actions

  • Testing Other Versions: Since you have not tested versions 7.6.2 or 7.6.4, it might be beneficial to do so to determine if the issue is isolated to specific versions.
  • Monitoring Release Notes: Keep an eye on the release notes for upcoming versions, such as 7.6.6 or 8.0.0, for any mentions of performance improvements or bug fixes related to the REST API.

If you need further assistance or have additional questions, feel free to ask!
