FortiGate OS Download

Greetings

I have recently got a second hand FortiGate 200D and because it was out of use for a couple of years the login and range is unknown. I tried to manual reset it but no luck and I cant discover the device I have tried multiple possible ranges. The device is not under support contract is there a way or place where I can download FortiOS to try and flash the device to factory settings with a usb?

Thanks in advance

Dear Bez,

You should still be able to recover the device through the bootloader menu using a console connection.

1. Connect to the FortiGate using a console cable (9600 baud).
2. Reboot the device and press any key when “Press any key to display configuration menu…” appears.
3. From the boot menu select `F: Format boot device` to erase the configuration.
4. If needed, you can also select `G: Get firmware image from TFTP server` to reinstall the firmware.

After the device boots, it should return to factory defaults:

* IP: 192.168.1.99
* Username: admin
* Password: *(blank)*

Firmware images are normally downloaded from the support portal of Fortinet, which typically requires the device to be registered with an active support contract.

Thank you for your reply.

I got into the device even tough the lights showed it had reset to factory the previous configs was still loaded.

I added all possible IP ranges to the laptop NIC and got sign of life used putty to then connect with Port 1 and exec factoryreset from the terminal.

After that I loaded in on the web ui with the default IP.

Hi Bez,

Nice work — that explains it. The LED reset doesn’t always fully clear the config, so the old settings can remain.

Using CLI (`exec factoryreset`) was the right fix, and glad you could access the GUI afterward with the default IP.

For future cases, using `F: Format boot device` from the boot menu ensures a complete reset.

warning! If you do format boot device in bootloader you will delete any firmware and your fgt will not boot further that the bootloader as long if you didn't upload new firmware!

Alas fimware flashing will not reset the device!

If you do have the admin password of it you could use a serial console and do "exec factoryreset" to reset it. Or do "show system interfaces ?" to see the current interface ips.

Also - accoarding to picures as I have 200D here - the 200d seems to have a reset button on the left side of its front. You could use something narrow to switch it but you have to do within one minute after bootup. This will also cause a factory reset.

This is really helpful info, especially the reminder about the TFTP recovery process. It’s a lifesaver when you can't get into the GUI but still have console access.

For anyone else running into this, just keep in mind that you'll definitely need that active support contract to grab the fresh firmware image from the portal first.

btw: unless you need to format there is yet annother option:

if the firmware is still running you could take an image, put it on a stick and name it image.out. Then plug that into your FortiGate and reboot it and it will install the image from the stick. However this is factory default behaviour and could have been disabled or reconfigured by someone...
