Can anyone confirm me if FortiGate 70G Firewall requires a separate license to operate or does the product comes with a base license when purchased new.

Hi @HafiUrRaza

FortiGate 70G firewall does not require a separate license to operate as a basic firewall, but it does require a license for advanced security features and firmware upgrades.

FortiGuard Security Services: Features like Intrusion Prevention (IPS), AntiVirus, Web Filtering, and Advanced Malware Protection require a paid subscription license. Without these, the services will show as "Not Licensed" in the GUI.
Firmware Upgrades: Starting from FortiOS v7.4.2, an active and valid support contract (license) is required to perform firmware upgrades. An inactive license will prevent upgrades.

It depends what you want to do with it but typically you would purchase at least a basic support license to grant you access to firmware updates. If you purchase a new one without a support contract I think you get a small amount of time for firmware updates, maybe 30 to 90 days.

Thank you for clarification, can you please tell me if no license is acquired, I will be able to use the product but won’t be getting any firmware updates?

This is definitely true for the F series models as I have one in my lab that isn’t licenced and stuck on old firmware. Not sure if they changed this for the G series as not come across that scenarios. I did noticed on the G series, during setup you have to enter your fortinet account to register the firewall to the portal, this seems to be required before you can fully configure the firewall.
