Question

FortiClient IPSec VPN regularly drops for some users

We have about 100 users using FortiClient (a mix of 7.2.11 and 7.2.12) on Windows 11 laptops (mostly 25H2 but some 24H2) to connect an IPSec tunnel to a Fortinet VM hosted in Azure (UK South). Some users (such as myself) never get connection issues, but some continually report that the VPN drops multiple times during the day. We've done the basic troubleshooting (restart Windows, sit close to the wireless access point, try a cable, speed tests, etc) but we're still unsure what causes this and how we can resolve it.

We opened a ticket with Fortinet to send logs and get to the bottom of this but thought I'd ask the community to see if others have found ways to maybe make it more stable and drop less frequently.

Your thoughts are very welcome :)

Log file from FCT and debug logs from FGT can help to find the root cause.

diag vpn ike log filter <some filter identifying your remote client>
diag debug application ike -1
diag debug enable

You can upload the result and we'll try to help.

Same scenario here, using Forticlient 7.2.10 and a physical 1001F. Since transitioning from SSL VPN to IPsec we are having random disconnections from certain users. We haven't been able to figure out yet why some users have issues and others don't.

Hi @dajana1,

Please check out this article. May be quite helpful: Understanding and troubleshooting IPSec V... - Fortinet Community

Hi,

We are experiencing similar issues here.

We are currently trying to migrate our customer SSL VPN to IPsec, but the results are erratic.
Many users have no issues at all, while others are unable to establish a connection or are disconnected frequently.

We are also seeing inconsistent behavior with split tunneling, where some users lose internet connectivity once the tunnel is established.

Our environment includes multiple FortiGate versions, FortiClient versions, Windows versions/configurations, and ISPs, yet these issues continue to occur frequently.

Me and some of my colleagues have look at this and tried everything we found online without great results.
