Application Control signatures

Good morning guys,

Recently I've upgraded my FG-600E to the latest and greatest 6.2. And now I have this push from the management to move towards the application based security rules. I guess that the competition is doing pretty well in selling application control ;) Thus, I have some question before moving forward. On the internet edge I have two firewalls. One is this aforementioned FG-600E. The vendor of the second firewall claims that their application control is superior to FG-600E, because they can recognize applications not only based on app signatures, but using heuristics as well. You know, the usual vendor FUD. I rather prefer to start the application on FG-600E rather then the other box, so I need some ammo to convince my boss. 

Can anybody confirm that application control on FortiOS is using heuristics and is not signature based only? I've spend some time going through the admin guide, but I could not find anything regarding heuristics ;(

I would appreciate any help here!
