Hi everyone, Need your advice. I currently am taking care of a Fortigate 200A. The previous guy left without telling me the password to the firewall and now I' m stuck trying to get in to configure some stuff inside. I am unable to contact the previous guy to ask about the password. I tried the default ' admin' with no password but could not go in from the web gui. Is there any other way to get into the firewall? Thanks jwswks

Hi, and welcome to the forums. Like in other forums, please use the Search function. I did it for you, searching for " reset password" , and found this: http://support.fortinet.com/forum/tm.asp?m=75049&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=reset%2Cpassword&language=single&tmode=&smode=&s=#75049 That is, if you have physical access to the FGT and are able to reboot it you can clear the admin password. HTH.

This is one Fortigate instance where Google is your friend. There' s a couple dozen hits with this exact same issue.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the input. ede_pfau: For searching I did a search before but that thread was not found...funny.. maybe due to me searching as a guest?? rwpatterson: I did a search with google before, but unable to hit what I needed. My previous IT lock the FW with a pasword and the admin with blank password do not work. The maintainer password I tried as well and somewhat unable to login as well. I went ahead to purchase another console cable to check if it is due to cable prob. Will try again today. But does the maintainer acct works with 200A?

Hi All, After changing the console cable, I managed to get the maintainer password to go through. Thanks for your advice.

As I' m almost never use the forum as a Guest I' ve tried to search as Guest and voila, hit the article cited right away. Keywords are ' password reset' , in ' body and subject' , search ' all forums' , ' author' left empty, ' within:' one year, ' list' 50 entries. The post is called ' Password recovery or reset' from Helensiasteve7k, dated 7/18/2011. And there are numerous other posts on this subject. Maybe you try to search again to get a feeling how not to shorten the list of hits unadvertedly. IMHO searching the forums returns more results and quality then searching the Knowledgebase (Fortinet will bash me for that...). If only so because KB articles are cited in forum posts but not the other way around.

To reset the FortiGate unit password 1. Connect the terminal to the FortiGate unit using the null modem cable. 2. Log on at the console* with the user name " maintainer" and password " bcpb" followed immediately by the unit serial number. You must enter the alphabetic characters of the serial number in upper case. 3. Enter the following commands: config system admin edit admin set password <mypassword> end
