Technical Tip: Clarification on FortiSwitch FS-M426E-FPOE and UPoE 802.3bt support
Description
This article clarifies that a FortiSwitch FS-M426E-FPOE does not support UPoE 802.3bt standard, and it is not able to provide full power to a FortiAP-431G through a single interface.
Scope
FortiSwitch FS-M426E-FPOE and FortiAP-431G, all firmware versions.
Solution
A FortiSwitch FS-M426E-FPOE is able to support FPoE on ports 17-24 but it is not able to support the 802.3bt PoE standard due to hardware limitations. FortiAP-431G needs 802.3bt or x2 802.3at PoE (Dual PoE current sharing) to work at full power. FortiSwitch FS-M426E-FPOE is not able to provide full power to FortiAP-431G on a single interface.
On FS-M426E-FPOE CLI the only two poe-port-mode options available are IEEE802_3AF and IEEE802_3AT:
FS-M426E # config switch physical-port
FS-M426E (physical-port) # edit port17
FS-M426E (port17) # set poe-port-mode ?
IEEE802_3AF IEEE802.3 AF
IEEE802_3AT IEEE802.3 AT
FS-M426E (port17) # next
FS-M426E (physical-port) # edit port24
FS-M426E (port24) # set poe-port-mode ?
IEEE802_3AF IEEE802.3 AF
IEEE802_3AT IEEE802.3 AT
FS-M426E (port24) #
To check the power consumption from FortiSwitch CLI:
get switch poe inline
To check the power consumption on a managed FortiSwitch from FortiGate CLI:
get switch-controller <FortiSwitch_serial_number> <port_name>
As a workaround, it is possible to create an aggregate interface between the LAN1 and LAN2 interfaces on FortiAP and FortiSwitch so the aggregate interface will offer redundant power. For more information:
FortiAP: LAN port aggregation and redundancy
FortiSwitch: Adding 802.3ad link aggregation groups (trunks)
FortiSwitch models currently able to support UPoE 802.3bt standard are FS-624F-FPOE, FS-648F-FPOE, and FS-T1024F-FPOE.
