Technical Tip: Port in Port View displays a green link light

Description

This article describes that the port is shown as green in the Port view even though a device is connected.

This indicates the port is detected to be up and operational but no MAC address has been read for the port.

Scope

Version: 8.x, 9.x.

Solution

1)  Verify the MAC address is listed for that port in the switch's MAC address table.

If the switch does not list the MAC address, the appliance is functioning properly.

There may be a faulty network cable between the switch port and end-station, or the end-station is asleep and not transmitting traffic.

If the MAC address is present in the switch's table, proceed with the following steps:

2) Select the Polling tab in the Device View and verify whether L2 polls are completed.

If polls are failing, see the related KB article Technical Note: Troubleshooting Poll failures.

3) If L2 polls are complete but no MAC addresses are returned, right-click on the switch and select Test Device Mapping.

Results should return for:
MAC Address Table ( L2 Poll )
IP->MAC Address ( L3 Poll ) (If configured)
Supported VLANs

If results are not returned, there is an issue with the device mapping.
Contact Support for assistance: open a ticket and attach results from Device Mapping Test.

4) Check to see if the MAC address that is connected to the port is being learned dynamically or statically by the switch.
Example: Dell switches will only show devices that are learned dynamically.  Statically assigned MAC addresses will not be displayed.

5) The Port security is enabled on Cisco Switches – Enable the Secure Ports option in the device model.
