Troubleshooting Tip: FortiGuard subscription showing 'Unknown' status in FortiManager

Description

This article describes why the FortiGuard subscription column status shows as "unknown" for a few FortiGate devices on FortiManager.

Scope

FortiManager/FortiManager-VM.

Solution

This article helps explain how to configure the FortiManager as a local FortiGuard server for FortiGates: Technical Tip: Configure FortiManager as a local FDN server for FortiGates.

The FortiManager should have the contract details of managed devices to show the information in the GUI or CLI.
The following articles explain how to upload an entitlement file on FortiManager to fetch the contract details:

The FortiGuard Subscription column in FortiManager -> FortiGuard -> Device Licenses has the 'Unknown' status.

The FortiGuard Subscription status is updated based on the selection in the Check License screen.

Select Check License to choose the FortiGuard license types for FortiManager to check for expiry dates. FortiManager will warn the user when they expire or are approaching expiry.

If a license is expiring in 30 days, its license status is in orange (warning). If a license is expired already, the status is in red (error).

If the FortiGate does not have any of the FortiGuard Subscription contracts, the status shows as 'Unknown'.

If the managed device has FortiGuard subscription contracts, the status will show as 'All Valid' or 'Expired', depending on whether the contracts are active or expired.

Always verify the dbcontract details using the following command on the FortiManager CLI:

This example will display all managed devices' contract information.

diagnose fmupdate dbcontract

This example will display the contract information for the serial number provided:

diagnose fmupdate dbcontract <FortiGate_Serial>

For example, the output below is how it looks when a FortiGate does not have any FortiGuard subscription contracts:

diagnose fmupdate dbcontract FG61F5TK00000000
