Description

This article describes key information about FortiManager system upgrading, downgrading, and configuration restoration.

Scope

FortiManager.

Solution

FortiManager does not support downgrades on a populated or even a factory default database.
FortiManager does not support the restoration of a backup file on a mismatching firmware version.
FortiManager does not support the restoration of a backup file on a matching firmware version with an existing database (configuration).
FortiManager upgrade path must be followed as indicated in the Release Notes.

It may be possible to perform some of these operations that are not supported, and do not see an immediate problem. However, unrecoverable back-end problems will be encountered during eventual usage.

After any firmware downgrade, the FortiManager MUST be factory reset, and disk format must be performed.

For any configuration restore procedure, the FortiManager must first be factory reset.

Downgrading can cause configuration loss as well. It is recommended to reset the device, using the commands below:

execute reset [all-settings | all-except-ip]

execute format disk
