Technical Tip: How to run the Teraterm script in the FortiMail

This article describes how to run the Teraterm script in FortiMail.

Scope

FortiMail.

Solution

Download and install the latest version of the Teraterm Application using the link below.
Tera Term 5.5.0

Increase the FortiMail admin idle time to 480 minutes at System -> Configuration -> Option -> Idle timeout.

Enable the 'telnet' option on the FortiMail port1 (management interface).

Get a PC that is able to power on 24/7.
Create a folder for logging purposes of the Teraterm script.

Edit the provided Teraterm Script (file extension with .ttl) with the Notepad++ application to change the directory path for logging purposes. Referring to the screenshot below, update the highlighted part with the directory path of the logging folder that was created in the step above. Then, update the username and IP address of the FortiMail accordingly, referring to the screenshot below.
Run the Teraterm Application.
Select the option 'Telnet' and TCP port '23'.

After logging in to FortiMail, go to Control -> Macro and select the Script file and click on the Open button.
Note: The extension of the teraterm script file is .ttl.

It should show some output from the Teraterm Application when the expected traffic is passing through the FortiMail.

Go to the logging folder that was created for the TeraTerm Script, and it should show that the logging file has been created.

Open the logging file that is created by the TeraTerm Script using Notepad++, and it should show some output from the logging by the FortiMail.

Monitor the Teraterm Script daily to make sure it is running, and help to re-rerun the Teraterm Script every 2 days to prevent the script from stopping itself.
