Troubleshooting Tip: SFP or RJ45 on a shared interface does not come up, even if the SFP or port is working properly

Description This article describes how to bring up a shared interface in cases where the wrong type is being selected.
Scope FortiGate with shared SFP / RJ45 ports.
Solution

In some cases, the FortGate's shared port may not select the right physical interface. This would cause the interface to be down, even if the physical SFP or RJ45 port is working properly.

It is possible to see what physical interface is selected by running the following command:

diag hardware shared-port <port>

In this example, the FortiGate did not choose a port type for 'wan2':

Even though there is an SFP detected with valid RX and TX values:

In order to bring this interface up, manually change the port type by running the following command:

diag hardware shared-port <port> fiber/copper
