Troubleshooting Tip: New VLANs created, but impossible to ping from the specific source IP to the VLAN interface on the FortiGate

Description This article describes an issue that occurs when a device on one VLAN is unable to ping the VLAN interface that is part of another VLAN.
Scope FortiGate.
Solution To resolve the inter-vlan communication issue on FortiGate, follow these steps:
  1. Go to System -> Network -> Interfaces and select the VLAN interface that is not responding to ping.
  2. Make sure the VLAN interface is enabled with ping. If it is not, select the checkbox to enable it.

  1. Verify that the policy is in place to allow 'ALL' traffic between the two VLANs. Go to Policy & Objects -> IPv4 Policy and check the policy configuration.

  1. Check the routing table to ensure that there is a route to the destination VLAN. Go to Monitor -> Routing Monitor and verify the routing table.

  1. If the issue persists, use a PCAP sniffer to capture the traffic and verify that the echo request is being sent and received correctly.
