Description

This article describes the reason for the error 'VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem' in the output of the command 'diagnose sys flash list' output.

Scope FortiGate.
Solution

FortiGate # diagnose sys flash list
Partition ImageEXT4-fs (sda2): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem
TotalSize(KB) Used(KB) Use% Active
1 FG9H0G-7.04-FW-build2795-250523 253871 145707 57% Yes
3 EXDB-1.00000 28327040 76532 0% No

This error appears if the FortiGate does not have a backup image, and when the command 'diagnose system flash list' is issued, it shows an 'EXT4-fs warning message: EXT4-fs (sda2): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem.'

In the output above, System Partition 2 is missing due to the absence of a backup image on this firewall.

This error happens because the command is probing the existence of a file system in the system partition, and when it does not find one, it displays this error. This warning message can appear in FortiGates with or without a Hard Disk.

Once a backup image is installed, this error will disappear.

This is not a hardware issue.

This is a firmware-related issue and does not affect the firewall’s functionality. This is only a warning that can be safely ignored.

It is expected to be resolved in future FortiOS versions.
