- ZebOS is a virtual router that runs in the user space of the Linux kernel.
- ZebOS handles the RIB (Routing Information Base) functionality in FortiOS.
- Performs the same function as Zebra/Quagga perform on a Unix unit.
- It decides which one of the possibly overlapping routes should actually be installed into the FIB.
- ZebOS was added to FortiOS in 2004 in FortiOS 2.80.
- Prior to that, the only dynamic routing was RIP.
Why ZebOS is used:
- There are no freely available alternatives.
- Since then, ZebOS has been used by many companies. For example: F5, Citrix Netscaler, Huawei, Fortinet.
- ZebOS supports more than 200 network protocols, including Layer 2, MPLS, Layer 3, Metro Ethernet, etc.
