Technical Tip: Unable to select 'FortiGate Only' under Firmware upgrade even though it is a Standalone device in Fabric

Description This article describes the behavior where a Standalone device in the Fabric, which is connected to FortiSwitch, cannot be upgraded individually without upgrading the FortiSwitch. 
Scope FortiGate.
Solution
  • When selecting Upgrade under System -> Firmware & Registration -> Upgrade all -> Devices, the option to upgrade 'FortiGate Only' is greyed out, including the Upgrade Status on the dashboard:

  • This is an expected behavior when the FortiSwitches are on an incompatible version:
